MULTICULTURAL COMMUNICATION TRAINING - Training for auxiliary teaching staff from TUIASI

”Multicultural Communication Training” it took place between September 9-10, 2022, at the "Creative Nest" Hub, in the T8 dormitory - Tudor Vladimirescu Iași campus, and took the form of training sessions for the auxiliary teaching staff of TUIASI, in communication. Funding was provided through the CNFIS-FDI-2022-0021 project, "Internationalization through transferable knowledge and visibility (iTRANSFER)".

Buddy System Buddy System

The aim of the training was to improve the participants' multicultural communication skills and develop a positive and inclusive behavior in relation to international students and collaborators.

Communication, involvement and positive energy were the words that characterized the training sessions held over the two days.

Buddy System Buddy System

Starting from the objectives proposed for the training: improving the knowledge of the participants regarding communication; the development of positive and inclusive behaviors and communication skills of the participants, for effective communication with students and international collaborators; the acquisition by the participants of some effective techniques regarding the understanding of various specific aspects of organizational communication, multicultural communication, multicultural communication barriers and ways to remove them; improving the English language communication of the participants, the training sessions included role-playing, as an active learning method based on the exploration of the learners' experience, within scenarios specific to the university's activity.

Buddy System Buddy System

The trainer designed the training sessions in an attractive way, including by jointly finding solutions to solve certain communication challenges, indicated by the participants, presenting in an interactive way the information from the proposed topic.

Buddy System Buddy System

The trainees embarked on the two-day journey into the world of multicultural communication by exploring the types of communication, going through concrete examples of communication in different cultures, learning characteristics of body language, proxemics, greeting, contact in different cultures and being involved in solving certain situations of communication specific to each one's activity.

Following the training, an evolution of the students' individual communication style was noted, as well as an improvement in their perception of effective ways of communicating with others, with all participants going through the topics covered with interest and attention.

Creativity, energy and fun for international and Romanian students – innovative ”bees”

Creativity, energy, fun, togetherness - these are the key words that describe the BEST Summer School, „The hubs and the bees, design the perfect academic hive!”, organized by BEST TUIASI and Vice-Rectorate for International Relations of ”Gheorghe Asachi” Technical University of Iasi, during 10-23 July 2022, with financial support from the project ”Internationalization through Transferable Knowledge and Visibility, iTRANSFER”, CNFIS-FDI-2022-0021.

Students enjoyed unique learning and networking experiences, starting with applying design thinking rules in making the profile of the user and the activities that will be held in the space, continuing with the process of proposing functional roles for the space.

Buddy System Buddy System

During the first week, the students and their trainers have focused on an entrepreneurial approach, starting with the needs identification, by interviewing possible beneficiaries, exploring the space and looking for the best facilities. In the Design Thinking methodology, this is called the “Empathize” step. This was followed by the “Define” step, with creating personas and synthesizing the identified needs converging towards the specific problem definition. The third step, “Ideate”, moved the activities to the solution space, consisting in generating ideas by structured brainstorming techniques followed by ideas clustering, voting and prioritization. The ideation step transitioned towards the second phase, in which the students moved from the hub functionalities to hub physical design and prototype.

During the second week, the students together with their trainers let their imagination run wild and through a series of brainstorming techniques, mind maps, mood boards and 3d design they came up with two different concepts for the space. The process was an exploratory and free one that challenged the skills of the participants, for whom architecture was not their field of study.

Buddy System Buddy System

Both the proposals wanted to keep the openness of the space intact, and to not intervene with hard partitions. The use of the curved line is deliberate and not just a design quirk, from a psychological standpoint shapes without corners make us feel more comfortable.

Buddy System Buddy System

The first proposal called Room with Views, takes advantage of the pillar and beam structure of the existing building and proposes a perforated façade in which small balconies can be added to create indoor-outdoor spaces. During the site visit the students observed that the pipes that collect rain water pass through the room and that lead to the addition of a green ceiling made with plants that can absorb some of the heat from the computers and act as a natural air-conditioning system. The color palette is neutral using a lot of wood and vegetation with just a pop of yellow. The premise that started the project was that nature increases productivity, looking outside the window, resting our eyes on vegetation can help us focus more, and make us feel less tired.

The second proposal called Bending- Mending Walls comes with a different strategy, it uses strong color to engage and stimulate the users and it manipulates space by eliminating the corners of the floor, making it one continuous curved surface. The study areas would be carved into the floor and covered in the same green vinyl. In the middle there is an orange pliable wall made out of recycled cardboard that can shipshape the room and create private areas. The aesthetic that was approach is an organic one with key word like soft, continuity, flow.

Some thoughts from the students about International Summer School:

The BEST experience was wonderful, I don't know where to start, I don't want it to sound like a cliché, but it was one of the most beautiful periods of my life. I discovered new people, different mentalities and got out of my comfort zone by having to work in a team within the Academic. I look at the time spent with the group, at all the activities, games, trips, walks and Dominic's food with nostalgia. The teachers and the BEST team always made sure that we didn't miss anything, thus offering us everything we needed to make the educational process worry-free.” - Madalin Costel

I had a great time during the course, I think that the activities you organized worked perfectly to break the ice, and everyone was really nice!! I'd add more tiramisu and crepes (I'm kidding, but really, they were really really tasty!!) I really liked the parties, I had lots of fun! I would definitely recommend it!!” - Inés

International Challenge Day, a multicultural experience for Erasmus+ and Romanian students from TUIASI

The International Relations Vice-Rectorate organized on May 7th, 2022, within the CNFIS-FDI-2022-0021 project, an event to promote the multicultural spirit for incoming students. They had the chance to discover together with their Romanian colleagues, with the Buddy System team of TUIASI and representatives of the International Relations Vice-Rectorate a wonderful place, full of history, near Iași - Miclăușeni Castle.

The main purpose of the event was to support incoming students in their easier adaptation to life at TUIASI, their integration into the academic, social and cultural environment of Iași, started with a guide of Miclăușeni Castle, on which occasion the young people found out historical details about the castle built by George Sturdza at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.Image

The day continued with Treasure Hunt, an opportunity for each of them to demonstrate their competitiveness, team spirit, but also to discover the beauty of Sturdza Palace Park. After this competition, having lunch at the Castle was a well-deserved reward.

All teams received specific diplomas, medals and sweets, and the winning team was rewarded with TUIASI promotions.

Above all, the discovery of special places, the friendships that were made, the joy of being together and singing together with songs specific to each participating country, the pleasant surprises that "spiced" all day created a positive energy which will surely be a pleasant memory from TUIASI.

Here are some testimonials from participating students:

Elizabeth, an Erasmus + student from Costa Rica, a member of the TUIASI Buddy System team: ”Saturday was really fun, I’m really thankful for the effort that the International Office team made to make us have a really good day. I think this was the perfect opportunity to unite us more in terms of friendship, I really enjoyed the day and I also really apreciated the opportunity to be part of such an amazing team.

Ștefan, TUIASI student: ”It was a day with and about people from around the world, whose interests are united and capitalized through activities that involve interest in order to succeed. The visit to Sturdza Castle was a source of culture, both we, the Romanian students, and our colleagues who came with the ERASMUS project were fascinated by the secrets hidden behind its objects and walls. After a journey into the past, the present was not going to bring a treasure hunt to the fairytale realm of the castle, it was going to take care of the hunt better highlighting the qualities of all countries, and combining them, everything was more than easy and throbbing. It was a very interesting project and an experience that we felt honored to live.
