Between October 28 and November 1, 2024, the "Gheorghe Asachi" Technical University of Iași hosted the International Staff Week event, "Effective university's strategy for a sustainable internationalisation", organized by the University Marketing Department and the International Relations Department-Erasmus+, within the Vice-Rectorate for International Relations.
Over the course of 5 days, TUIASI became a center of cultural and linguistic diversity, where 23 representatives of academic communities and support staff from universities from 12 countries participated in workshops, presentations, and socializing activities.
The event was designed to strengthen ties between universities in EU countries and those outside the European Union, to identify and explore the fundamental pillars of an effective strategy for sustainable internationalization, but also to exchange good practices regarding programs taught in English.
The event was opened by Professor Irina Lungu, Vice-Rector for International Relations, who emphasized in her speech the importance of cooperation between universities and the strengthening of international relations, the promotion of innovation and creativity in the development of study programs taught in English, and the role of TUIASI as a member of the INGENIUM Alliance of European Universities.
Afterwards, for a better cultural understanding, the guests made a brief foray into language elements, by participating in a Romanian language and culture course, followed by university presentations and socializing activities.
The presentations on the second day of ISW were particularly attractive and were followed by an interactive workshop, during which the participants, supported by facilitators from TUIASI, identified the most important pillars of the internationalization of higher education and analyzed the relevant aspects of each, challenges, KPIs, etc.
The city tour offered guests a unique experience that took them from the Rectorate of the "Gheorghe Asachi" Technical University of Iași to the Palace of Culture, on Stefan cel Mare and to the National Theater, on Cuza Voda and then to Piata Unirii, allowing them to immerse themselves in the historical atmosphere of Iași.
The following day's debates focused on key aspects of university internationalization, such as Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) mobilities, good practices and obstacles in developing sustainable English-taught programmes. We enjoyed the presence of Erasmus+ coordinators from the faculties, who shared their experiences and created a space for dialogue and exchange of good practices.
A special focus was placed in the following workshop on the INGENIUM Alliance, on which occasion one of the key representatives of the INGENIUM consortium, Mr. Jesus Daniel Santos, Institutional Coordinator of the INGENIUM Project at the University of Oviedo, Coordinator of the Alliance presented the success story and the pillars of the INGENIUM University's cooperation model with stakeholders.
LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® formed the basis of the next day's workshop, based on this methodology of facilitating effective interactions between team members and adapted to the issues of international students. Increased participation and involvement in meaningful discussions on issues specific to the internationalization of higher education were noted, as was the increased motivation of each participant to work in a team, supporting problem solving by encouraging creativity.
As a natural continuation, the next workshop, "Student needs come first", focused on identifying emotional needs, with applicability in identifying student needs and creating a climate of trust and encouragement within the academic environment.
The day that concluded the series of events within the International Week was one of remembering the good practices identified and continuing the steps to initiate new collaborations, thus ensuring the continuity of our internationalization efforts.
Between September 2-27, 2024, the Vice-Rectorate for International Relations organized two series of courses, "EMpowering Educators through EMI (English as Medium of Instruction)", held within the project "Rethinking Skills for Internationalisation - iSKILLS", project code CNFIS-FDI -2024-F-0016.
EMI (English as a Medium of Instruction) - the use of English to teach academic subjects (other than English itself) in countries or jurisdictions where the mother tongue of the majority of the population is not English”. (Macaro, E., Curle, S., Pun, J., An, J., & Dearden, J. (2018). A Systematic Review of English Medium Instruction in Higher Education. Language Teaching, 51(1), p .37).
The general objectives of the course included: improving the English language skills of TUIASI teachers, giving them the opportunity to improve their English comprehension, speaking, teaching skills in an academic context; the development of critical and analytical thinking through exposure to a course support created specifically for this endeavor; preparation for an international professional environment.
The training was provided by teaching staff trainers from the Center for Applied Modern Languages and Communication of TUIASI, LINGUATEK.
The course ended with an assessment, after which the participants received a certificate of language skills.
The BEST Iași student association, in partnership with the "Gheorghe Asachi" Technical University of Iași, organized on Monday, July 15th, 2024, the official opening of the "Desert Dreams: Delving into the Abstraction of Smart Campus Landscapes" International Summer School.
Students from Europe and the United States of America were present until July 22 at TUIASI, where they worked in teams to propose projects to transform the "Tudor Vladimirescu" Student Campus into a smart campus model.
The teaching staff who offered the young people academic and practical guidance during this period are: Assoc.Prof. Ciprian-Romeo Comșa, vice-rector of TUIASI, Assoc.Prof. Marius Ciprian Brînzilă, professor at the Faculty of Electrical, Energy and Applied Informatics Engineering and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eng. Bogdan Rusu, from the Faculty of Industrial Design and Business Management. Alongside them, Marius Imbrea, head of the Campus Infrastructure Service, and Tudor Ghețău, a master's student from the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technology, also taught the students.
Prof. Irina Lungu, vice-rector in charge of international relations, mentioned in the event opening.
"This is what the diversity that our institutions work for means in practice: not to differentiate between the participants, which countries they are from and where they come from. Internationalization and diversity: when you enter a classroom to see students and Europe and the US together. When we started the first discussions about this summer school, I confess that it seemed too ambitious to me: to bring people from the USA for a summer course that they still didn't know much about. But they had faith in us, and when the confirmation came a few months ago, they were already ready".
Beyond the academic aspects, the course program also included activities specially designed to allow students to discover the impressive architecture, lively nightlife and traditional Moldovan cuisine.
During June 14-15, 2024, within the project "Rethinking Skills for Internationalization - iSKILLS", Project Code: CNFIS-FDI-2024-F-0016, under the organization of the Vice-Rectorate of International Relations, was held the training "Embedding communication skills for successful international projects". Its objective was to train representatives of the TUIASI academic community to increase their communication skills within international projects.
The training has 2 stages, the first being an interactive approach with teamwork, and the other a follow-up that will be carried out after a period of time. A special emphasis was placed on the active participation of each participant and teamwork.
The trainers, Cezar Gumeni and Horia Gumeni, appreciated both the organization of the event and the exemplary way in which the participants chose to participate actively and provide examples from their own experience. ”My participation in the training on Saturday, June 15, 2024, organized by the "Georghe Asachi" Technical University in Iasi, was marked by great joy and honor. Although the participants came from different faculties within the Technical University, we noticed that this did not prevent them from actively participating in the discussions, asking questions, providing examples from their own experience and even maintaining the atmosphere through personal contributions. In conclusion, as I mentioned before, it was and always will be a great joy for me to meet again with the teaching staff of the Technical University, primarily due to their high professional quality, but also their wonderful human quality." - Cezar Gumeni
And for trainer Horia Gumeni, training was a real challenge. ”The group had an impressive dynamic. The fact that they came from different departments and faculties meant that the young teachers provided diverse and very personal input. I want to note the openness and involvement shown by all the participants during the entire course. Not infrequently real debates arose, which ultimately led to unexpected conclusions. The results of the focus groups on two ongoing projects were creative and surprising."
The topics covered included: brand, university image; university communication standards; time management; activities and communication channels; project identity; dissemination of project results – sparked the interest of participants who engaged in engaging dialogues. ”For me the two days of the workshop represented a chance to learn new things about successful communication in international projects. The theoretical part of the workshop was a dynamic, engaging one, in which we had a constant dialogue with the one who supported the training, and in the practical part, in which we worked in teams, we built the "brand" at a conceptual level ” of an international project. From my point of view, the whole activity was extremely pleasant, necessary and I recommend it to other colleagues as well." - Claudiu Romila, Faculty of Civil Engineering and Building Services.
”The training organized within the project facilitated a personalized dialogue of the participants with the trainers, both on the side of situations encountered in practice, and related to the conditions of participation, existing intercultural differences, group composition and others. The sharing of the experiences of each of us contributed to the analysis and consolidation of some aspects related to good practices and the development of project activities in the best conditions.", - Mihai Boca, Faculty of Machine Manufacturing and Industrial Management.
”How durable and sustainable from an organizational point of view it is to find ourselves from time to time at an intensive course within the University 🙂 especially when we have moderators of a high professional standing and with very good training in reading the dynamics of the group." -Ramona Costea, Faculty of Architecture "G. M. Cantacuzino".
Friday, May 17th 2024, between 9.30-16.30, within the project "Rethinking Skills for Internationalization - iSKILLS", project code CNFIS-FDI-2024-F-0016, the Vice-Rectorate for International Relations organized the workshop: "Research Diversity - Making diversity and internationalization work in research and research management", in room R02, Building R, Faculty of Civil Engineering and Building Services.
The workshop provided an understanding of the challenges of diversity and internationalization in research and the models and the specific tools that can be applied later. The academic structural elements of the environment were presented and debated in some working groups who make diversity a challenge, but also specific ideas regarding the incorporation of diversity and internationalization in research strategies, in research proposals and in the management of international research projects.
The main objectives of the workshop were:
Trainer, Jakob Feldtfos Christensen, Director, Diversiunity, with relevant experience in the field of diversity, internationalization and research, presented the diversity integration model, equity and inclusion in the activity of the research offices and the the working material in the workshop.
